If your child
is absent Each time your child is absent due to
personal or religious reasons he or she is
missing an important day of school.
Roosevelt does not receive funding for
students who are not physically present in
school. We ask that you make every effort
to ensure that your child attends school
each day that he or she is healthy. So, if
you are planning family trips or
scheduling appointments, please try to
avoid doing so while school is in
session.
If your child will be out of school
because of a communicable disease, please
notify the school immediately. This is an
important step in the control of disease.
If your child had a communicable disease,
check with the nurse's office before he or
she returns to the classroom.
Report all cases of head lice to the
school nurse. After appropriate treatment,
the nurse, when available, can approve
your child's return to school.
Any student who is absent from school
without a valid excuse for more than three
days is considered truant and shall be
reported to the Principal.
When your child returns to
school
He or she must bring a note signed by the
parent or guardian, with the specific
reason for their absence, for example, the
"flu" or "fever". If your child had a
communicable disease, such as measles,
chicken pox, or strep throat, check with
the nurse's office before he or she
returns to the classroom. The child must
bring a release slip from the family
doctor.
If your child is late
Children arriving after school begins are
tardy. Teachers note this on their
records. If they are over 10 minutes late,
students must sign the tardy book in the
office. Tardies are very disruptive to the
classroom. Please be considerate of the
other students and the teacher.
Any student who tardy in excess of 30
minutes on each of more than five days in
one school year is considered truant and
shall be reported to the Principal.
If your child needs to make up
homework
If your child is absent and you wish to
pick up school assignments, call the
office before 9:30AM to request the
assignments. The child's homework may be
picked up in the office after 3:00PM that
same day.
If your child needs to leave
early
Students may be excused from class only
with the full knowledge and consent of the
parent or guardian. An adult needs to
report to the office and sign out the
child.
The school releases a student to an adult
only when the adult has been properly
identified by a school authority and is
listed on the student's emergency card.
The school cannot release a student at his
or her own request.
To pick up your child, follow these
steps:
* Send a note to the teacher regarding the
day and time of the appointment.
* The parent or other responsible adult
reports to the office and signs out the
student.
* The office calls the student out of
class and he or she may leave with the
adult.
Please help us by making sure that your
child understands that once on campus, he
or she may not leave without formal
permission either during or after
school.
Disciplinary
actions at Roosevelt focus on a positive
approach. We feel that it is reasonable to
expect children to follow basic rules and
act in a courteous and fair way to others.
Our goal is to enable children to be
successful, thus enhancing their self
esteem.
Behavior Expectations
We believe in a just and fair process of
learning. Therefore, we expect all
students and adults at Roosevelt to:
* Focus on learning and be prepared to
learn.
* Respect the rights of others to learn
and study.
* Be kind to yourself and others.
* Show respect for property.
* Behave safely and have regard for the
safety of others.
Although our
mutual goal should be to teach our
children personal responsibility,
occasionally you may need to contact your
child or bring in an item during the
school day.
Make every effort to not interrupt
valuable instructional time by going to
the classroom with forgotten items or
messages. For the safety and concentration
of all our students, please follow these
guidelines:
If you need to see your child during
the school
Please report to the office and leave a
message. Do not go directly to your
child's classroom. Ask the office to send
messages to your child only in the event
of an emergency.
If you need to deliver something to
your child Take the item to the office where it
can be picked up or delivered to your
child at an appropriate time. Do not go
directly to your child's classroom.
School Telephone Children may use the office phone only
in emergency situations.
There is a public telephone in the school
office. Children may use this phone before
or after school hours. Please send $.35
with your child if he or she needs to use
the pay phone.
Formal
parent/teacher conferences occur in
November for grades 1 - 5 and in September
and January for Kindergarten. You have an
opportunity to schedule your first
conference at Back-To-School Night in
September.
Feel free to speak to your child's teacher
regularly. You may call the office to
leave a message or schedule a conference
with the teacher.
Please do not interrupt the class as it
disrupts the students. Thank you for your
cooperation in this important matter!
Birthdays
Do not distribute party invitations at
school. Please handle these arrangements
outside of the school day.
Celebrating a birthday is very important
but Roosevelt classes do not celebrate
individual birthdays, as some birthdays
occur in the summer months and it would
not be fair to these students.
Parties At Roosevelt, each classroom is
allowed two parties a year.
The teacher and the PTA room
representatives decide what event, when
and how the parties will occur. For
example, most classrooms reserve the end
of the year for the big party and perhaps
one other holiday.
At Roosevelt, we
greatly encourage all parents to be
involved at our school.
There are many opportunities for your
participation. Parents can help with:
· volunteering in classrooms or CREST
before-and-after school care
· tutoring
· fund raising
· participating in a variety of
special programs on campus
· donating needed materials
· Volunteering for playground
supervision for recess
· helping in the library or computer
lab
· joining and participating in the
PTA
· attending the Parent Workshops
· serving on committees as
representatives for Roosevelt
At Roosevelt, we appreciate all of the
help and support from our parents!
All of us working together provides the
best possible education for all of
our children.

Toys
Students are not allowed to bring personal
toys to school. This includes electronic
toys such as gameboys, trading cards, or
sporting items. Roosevelt is not
responsible for any lost or damaged
items.
Skateboards, Rollerblades, and
Scooters
Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School
District's insurance policy prohibits the
use of skateboards, rollerblades, and
scooters on school property.
If your child brings these to school, the
items will be confiscated and released
only to parents.
Clothing
Students should wear rubber-soled shoes
for P.E., and playing on the playground
and the apparatus.
Hats are not to be worn inside the
classrooms. Your child may wear a school
baseball hat outside during recess or
breaks.
Write your child's name on all personal
items, such as jackets, sweaters,
lunchboxes, and backpacks.
If your child misplaces an item, check in
the Lost-and-Found cabinet by the Nurse's
office.
Each year, your
child receives a new folder from his or
her teacher. This folder is used to send
home important papers on Wednesdays.
Timely school notices and PTA bulletins go
home in the Wednesday folders.
Every week, check your child's folder,
read through your packet and take note of
any changes or important announcements.
Please return the folder to his or her
class the next day.
Notices about other extended programs or
community activities go home and are
available in the Office on Fridays.
