go back over sentence or word and start again.

Use pictures

look at the pictures for context and clues in what the word might be.

Sound out

using the beginning and ending consonants & blendsto help figure out the word.

Recall

have you seen the word before? Does it look similarto another word?

Compare

think of similar words(look for words or parts of words already known within words [wordchuncks and word patterns]).

Read-On

read to the end of the sentence to see what would make sense.

Placeholder

may substitute a word if it doesn't change meaning( go back and check beginning letter and sound & make sure it makes sense as a substitution).

Ask

ask someone after trying other strategies.

Check

does it make sense.

 

 

Strategies should be modeled directly, discussed and reinforced continually so childrencan internalize them.
